The Jennings Rivers Ride 2016

Sunday October 2nd 2016

The Fifth Annual Jennings Rivers Ride

The Jennings Rivers Ride 2016 is the FIFTH edition of this annual charity bike ride raising funds for Cumbria Community Foundation.

This year we felt that it was time for a Rivers Ride Reboot so we're delighted to offer riders the fresh challenge of FOUR FANTASTIC NEW ROUTES which are suitable for riders of ALL ABILITIES – from families and occasional riders looking for a charity or personal challenge all the way through to seasoned sportive addicts looking to test their mettle against an epic new Lake District sportive route.

The Jennings Rivers Ride has developed a reputation as Cumbria’s friendliest cycle sportive and we'd like to invite riders old and new to join the Rivers Ride Community on Sunday 2nd October for a ride to remember from our new start / finish venue in Cockermouth.

Ride through the Lake District and raise money for ONE great charity – Cumbria Community Foundation.

Cycling for a Reason

We invite you to take this cycling challenge to help raise money for Cumbria Community Foundation - the charity behind the Flood Recovery Appeal which helps bring people who care together with causes that matter. The charity awards more than £2m a year in much needed grants to over 500 community projects per year.

Severe storms in December 2015 caused flooding across many parts of Cumbria. More than 6,000 homes were affected across the entire county of Cumbria and many footpaths, roads & bridges were destroyed and parts of the old railway line between Threlkeld and Keswick on the Coast to Coast Cycle Route were washed away.

The Jennings Rivers Ride – A Brief History

The Rivers Ride was established as a fundraising and community response to the 2009 Cumbria floods and from the very beginning the event has been supported by local brewers Jennings. As the Jennings Brewery in Cockermouth was, once again, hit by flooding 2015 and we wanted to create fresh new challenge this year it seemed appropriate to move the event to Cockermouth.

The 2016 Rides and Routes

From a fun fancy dress Family Ride to an epic day with over 3,000m of ascent including three Lake District passes, there is something for everyone to try.

Family Ride Trail Quest

Key Stats: Plan your own route from the 'Treasure Map' and ride for as long as you want – up to 2 hours

This year the Family Ride format is changing to a treasure hunt on wheels. This on- and off-road challenge is designed for mountain, hybrid and cyclocross bikes and will see families plan and navigate their own route around a cycling orienteering / Trail Quest course spurred on by the challenge of collecting treasure (chocolate coins). Whether you collect one coin or all of them every family who returns with a coin wrapper (we anticipate they'll be empty at the end) and pops it into the draw is in with the chance of winning a prize.

The Community Challenge Ride

Key Stats: 44kms / 27.5 miles – 860m of ascent – one feed station @ 48% distance

The Jennings Rivers Ride Short Route has always been a tough but do-able challenge for the not so regular rider and this year's new route is no exception. You may be glad to hear that Whinlatter Pass has gone but it's been replaced by, no less challenging, rolling roads with the odd cheeky climb (or two).

The Foundation Fandango

Key stats: 84kms / 52.5 miles – 1,650m of ascent – two feed stations @ 32% and 71% distance

A shade over 80km / 50 miles on some of the finest roads and lanes the North Lakes has to offer. Don't let the absence of the big name passes kid you into thinking this is just a normal 50 mile ride – with over 1,600m of ascent and a route profile that's either heading up or down – this is a beautiful ride and is one to savour.

The Big Day Out

Key Stats: 134kms / 83.75 miles – 3,008m of ascent – three feed stations @ 18%, 56% and 80% distance

An epic new Lake District sportive route that offers the same climbing challenge of a big day in the Alps or Pyrenees. The signature triple pass challenge of The Big Day Out – Whinlatter, Newlands and Honister – remains but are now at the start of the route. After that the climbs get a little shorter and lower but they more make up for that with their quantity! A real saw-tooth route profile and one that offers views of some of the best scenery in the Lake District.

Your entry fee covers the cost of staging the event and all additional proceeds go directly to The Cumbria Community Foundation. If you would like to learn more about Cumbria Community Foundation check out their website

Who can take part / How to enter

The Event Registration Form must be completed by a person aged 18 years or over.

The Community Challenge Ride and The Foundation Fandango: Riders between the ages of 16 and 17 may enter the The Community Challenge Ride and The Foundation Fandango routes but a parent / legal guardian must accompany these riders throughout the event. One adult can accompany up to six young riders on these routes.

Family Ride Trail Quest: Participants under the age of 18 years will be allowed to participate in the Family Trail Quest with the consent of their parent or legal guardian who must sign the Event Registration Form on behalf of the under-age rider. The parent / legal guardian must accompany the underage rider throughout the event.

Signing the Event Registration Form is an acceptance for the actions and consequences of the under-age rider.

Teams/Groups

We encourage teams to enter this event and also fundraise for Cumbria Community Foundation. A number of team entries have made Cumbria Community Foundation their workplace charity of the year. This is an excellent way of keeping the pre-event training and fundraising goal in focus whilst developing a team espirit de corps.

  1. One person (the Team Leader) can enter everyone on the behalf of the Team
  2. The Team Leader will need to have all their team's details to hand in order to complete the registration process. The info required includes all team members names, email address, mobile / landline number and their Emergency Contact Details
  3. The Team Leader must first create a profile on Results Base when registering.
  4. The Team Leader can then add all the team members into the same profile. This should all be done before entering anyone in the event!
  5. Once the Team Leader has all the members listed in their profile they can now select which ride distance(s) each rider wishes to enter using the Individual Entry button - even though you are entering multiple riders they are all individuals!
  6. Thank you, you can now pay for all your Team!

Family Entries for the Family Ride Trail Quest

Follow Steps 1 – 6 above but use the Family Entry button, not the individual entry!

Top Tip - If you are entering the Family Ride Trail Quest you will be asked for a Team Name at the first step of the process. Please use something like Family (for example, Family Robinson). The system just needs something to group the people together with so that it can allocate one price to the three people.

Please note if you are a family of four or more you will need to enter as two families, they can have the same team name!
