The Radar Ride

Sunday May 22nd 2016

Wanlockhead, Dumfries and Galloway

Ride options of 105, 70 and 40 miles

Online entry closed - on the day entry available at £40

In 2008, when the UK sportive scene boasted little more than 100 events, the then-titled Southern Uplands Sportive took the rule book and re-wrote it.

In addition to the remotest and highest 'village depart' on the calendar, SUS08 challenged competitors to a choice of punishing routes: 40, 70 or 105 miles. Each starting in Wanlockhead - the highest village in Scotland - and finishing outside the NATS radar station at the top of Lowther Hill - the highest paved road in Scotland and the second highest in the whole UK.

This was the first summit finish of any UK sportive. The road from Elvanfoot near the M74 climbs for five miles to Leadhills. It then climbs for a further mile to the outskirts of Wanlockhead before turning sharp left for the final twisting and tortuous three mile ascent to the summit of Lowther Hill.

At 725 metres it is higher than the Bealach Na Ba and, in the UK, is topped only by the road to another NATS installation at Great Dun Fell in Cumbria.

On 22nd May - after a six-year absence - the now-titled Radar Ride returns; and the summit finish is just one of the 'delights' awaiting competitors in the 2016 edition.

The route passes through the stunning southern uplands, crosses the Drumlanrig Estate (home to the Duke of Buccleuch), and includes the six-mile climb of the Dalveen Pass as well as the Devil's Beeftub above Moffat and the iconic 20% slopes of the fearsome Wall of Talla.

Ride prices

The full 105 mile Radar Ride £32.50
The medium 70 mile Junior Radar £30.00
The short 40 mile Baby Radar £27.50

All online entries will be charged a £1.50 booking fee per rider and each order will include a small additional fee to cover card processing costs.

Registration is limited to just 300.

Free stuff!

After the ride you'll be able to go to a dedicated website and download images of yourself on the ride which are being taken for us by Dumfries College. The best part is that these images will be FREE, something you could easily pay £8-10 for on any other ride. When we last ran the ride the service was hugely popular and we're putting out even more photographers this time. So, clean that bike, wear your favourite kit and put on your best gurning face!
