Wild Water, Forest & Mountains

Ennerdale is a remote valley on the western fringes of the Lake District National Park. A truly spectacular location for trail running with a fantastic combination of trails in a unique natural environment. It is surrounded by some of the Lake Districts most iconic mountains; Great Gable, Pillar and Haystacks, providing a natural backdrop full of dramatic ridges and wooded slopes.

Venue: Ennerdale Scout Centre, Ennerdale Bridge, Cumbria, CA23 3AR

All routes will be fully marked so no navigation experience is necessary.

Ranging from single-track lakeshore trails through woodland and into forest, the varied terrain offers a diverse and exciting course to runners.


10km route: A spectacular low-level lakeshore route around Ennerdale Water. The trail offers stunning views looking into the wild valley across to the fells of Great Gable, Pillar and Steeple.

25km route: An extended circuit of the 10km route around Ennerdale Water venturing further into the remote valley. Staying low level, the route follows forested trails alongside the river Liza beneath the stunning backdrop of Pillar Rock, eventually re-joining the 10k route finishing along the shores of Ennerdale.

These are ideal route for all abilities, you do not have to be super-fast or an elite athlete to enter, perfect if you are new to trail running and looking for a new challenge.

Terrain: A low level undulating route with a great combination of off-road running terrain throughout. The first section of the course is on well surfaced gravel trails and forest roads along the lakeshore, set beneath the crags of Bowness Knott. The route returns along the southern shores of Ennerdale. This section is rough underfoot and very rocky, with a short-exposed scramble around Anglers Crag.

Entries: Minimum entry age 17 years old.
