New for 2023: Due to the extensive storm damage from last winter there are still several trails in need of repair at Kielder. This gave the opportunity to plan for some exciting improvements to the events. For 2023 we have made some modifications to the previous routes and feel these will be more enjoyable courses overall.

The 10m and 10k routes are still the same figure of eight format, returning through the castle grounds after the initial loop. The main difference being the second section which does not involve the long ascent up through the forest to Castle Hill.

For the duathlon, the mtb route basically remains the same, incorporating the superb Osprey mtb trail. However, both run routes are slightly shorter in distance, with the main difference being Run 2 which does not involve the long ascent up through the forest to Castle Hill. This will now be a less demanding second run ensuring some faster racing or a more achievable event to complete.

All routes will be fully marked so no navigation experience is necessary.

Kielder Winter 10 Trail Race - Saturday

The Kielder 10mile trail run is open to all abilities of runners. Whether you are a seasoned veteran or new to trail running this varied course offers something for everyone. Incorporating a great blend of terrain, you will be tackling some of the amazing trails that Kielder Forest has to offer, from the secluded Archer Cleugh Burn to the more popular Lakeside Way multi user trail.

The course will be fully marked so all you need to do is follow the route and enjoy the scenery! This is a great event to bring along family and friends for spectating. With the route returning through the finish area at the halfway point there's plenty of opportunity to offer encouragement.

Start Time: 1030

Kielder Dark Skies 10k Trail Race - Saturday

“Northumberland International Dark Sky Park is England’s first Dark Sky Park and the largest expanse of dark night sky in the whole of Europe, thanks to minimal light pollution” (Source: Visit Kielder).

According to the Campaign for the Protection of Rural England (CPRE), the star-studded skies above Kielder Water & Forest Park are the darkest in England.

The best time for viewing is during the winter months, when the nights are darkest. Combine this with an awesome trail running route on a great mixture of forest trails then what further incentive do you need to pack your head torch, some warm winter gear and experience this amazing evening run set in the beautiful confines of Kielder Forest.

Start Time: 1645

Venue: Kielder Castle Visitor Centre, Kielder Water & Kielder Forest Park, Northumberland NE48 1ER

"Both races on Saturday were great, well organised and super friendly marshals - thanks"

Kielder Off Road Duathlon - Sunday

A superb multi-sport challenge combining trail running and mountain biking based in Kielder Forest Park. This event is ideal if you are new to duathlons or aiming to compete in your first off road event. With stunning scenery and an extensive network of forest tracks and purpose-built bike trails, this is a spectacular location for trail running and mountain biking.

Cyclo Cross/Gravel Bikes: are permitted although the terrain is more suited to MTB. With the increasing popularity of gravel/cross bikes, for 2023 there will be a separate results category available for both mtb and cross bikes.

Relay Category for Pairs: One person cycles, the other runs. This is open for male, female and mixed teams - ideal for specialist runners/cyclists or beginners who would like to test themselves over a single discipline.

Course: Starting and finishing at Kielder Castle, the event consists of a 7.5km trail run followed by a 23km mountain bike, incorporating the blue graded bike trail, finishing with a final 5.8km trail run. Due to the time of year both runs will be staying fairly low on a good mix of forest tracks and woodland trails. The run routes are not too hilly or steep. The courses will be marked; therefore, no navigational skills are needed.

Start Time: 1030

Venue: Kielder Castle Visitor Centre, Kielder Water & Kielder Forest Park, Northumberland NE48 1ER
