PRE-SWIM
1. Registration – please report to the Sandown & Shanklin Inshore Lifeboat Headquarters at Western Esplanade, Sandown, PO36 8JS. Registration will be open from 9.30am to 11am. Please be aware that registration is required for all swimmers entered into the race by 11am latest – we recommend arriving well before this time to avoid queuing and to ensure the swim starts on time.
2. Pre-race Safety Briefing – this is compulsory for swimmers and will take place just prior to the Swim, at the start line on the beach adjacent to Sandown Pier, at 11.45am.
3. Race start time – will be at 12pm from the beach near the registration point.
4. Decision not to swim after registration – it is very important that you let one of the event organisers know that you will not be swimming, together with your name and swimmer number. They will be wearing either yellow Pier2Pier crew t-shirts or pale blue polo shirts displaying a Marlins Swim Club logo.
5. Contact on day of swim – if you are travelling from the mainland and experience delays on the day of the swim please call or text Fiona Claxton on 07792 584066.
6. Swim caps – during the registration process you will be provided with a swim cap. This must be worn during the swim for health & safety reasons.
7. Transport of bags to finish point – one bag per swimmer will be transported to the finish point, Shanklin Rowing Club boat house. Please leave them in the van parked at the beach slipway leading to the promenade at 11.35am. No liability for any losses can be accepted.
8. Toilet facilities - the nearest facilities are located opposite the Sandown Pier entrance, east of the Lifeboat Station. Toilets are also located on the revetment to the west of the Lifeboat station.
9. Teams - we will be holding two team competitions as we have in previous years, the Fastest Team x 4 people and the Generation Trophy x 2 people from different generations of the same family. Further information on how to enter a team will be sent closer to the date of the Swim.
POST-SWIM
1. Refreshments – an energy bar and water will be provided in a goody bag during registration. Soup and a bread roll will be provided in the Shanklin Rowing Club, where the bar will also be open to all swimmers.
2. Toilet facilities – there are public toilet facilities situated at either end of Shanklin revetment (Chine Bluff), near the Fishermans Cottage pub, and at the bottom of Hope Hill.
3. First aid facilities – are also available in the Shanklin Rowing Club.
4. Timing – we will again be using an app-based timing system to record swimmers’ times, via our partner Results Base Ltd. For a small additional charge there will be a text option to enable swimmers to have their results sent to their mobile phones. This option needs to be selected when booking your place on the swim.
5. Presentations – trophies and winners commemorative keepsakes will be presented on the beach adjacent to the Rowing Club if weather permits, at approximately 1.30pm, or as soon as the results have been processed. Please bear this in mind when making travel arrangements.
Approximately one month prior to the swim further information relating to the swim route and safety matters will be e-mailed to entrants.
